When the President comes to town it’s a big deal. The security clearance, the people, the media and did I say the security?  On March 6th, President Barack Obama made a stop at Benedict College in Columbia, SC.  The President greeted a pack crowd of students, community leaders and a bevy of media from across the state and beyond. I worked the event as a field producer for the local CBS affiliate in Columbia. When we arrived at Benedict college our team went through an extensive search by security. I was so grateful I had cleaned out my purse the night before. Whew! No embarrassing moments there.

Once inside we found our section and settled in for the wait. And it was a wait. The production crew arrived earlier to set up camera equipment for live reports during the event.  Technology surely was gold this day. From remote radio broadcasts via a smartphone;  laptops and tablets for reporting the Presidents visit in real time.  During our wait time we used it to charge our phones but also connect with other media friends. Contrary to what some think television people from competing stations really do get along.

Then the moment we all waited for: President Barack Obama enters the stage to more than a thousand applauding spectators. He thanked South Carolina native and Congressman Jim Clyburn for being a friend. He also thanked South Carolina for supporting him in his second term as President.

The POTUS spoke briefly about his incentive “My Brother’s Keeper” and to my surprise opened the floor for questions. The questions ranged from wishing a college student happy birthday, job growth, gun violence and some advice for a 10 year-old aspiring to be the next President. Trace Adams told Obama he was considering becoming president one day, causing the president to respond: “I might just be warming up the seat for you.” Mister President advised Trace to work hard in school, get involved in service projects and graduate from college.

The akward moment: The commander-in chief was speaking about Ferguson when an audience member rather eager to ask his question kept jumping around to get the President’s attention. He got it, but not in a way he may have wanted. The President in the middle of speaking about law enforcement in Ferguson said, “Young man, sit down, I’m in the middle of talking.” The best way I can compare it to, is the moment you are acting up in Sunday school and the church deacon comes along and gives you the stern talking too. Ouch!

While it was totally cool spending the day in the White House press pool, there were reminders that this was another day on the job. The mad dash to get the interviews with the second most popular person in the room besides the President, that spunky 10 year old. The chance to be so close to the President of the free world yet not able to get a picture(insert sigh). And the traffic afterwards. But at least I can see I was in the room and have a press pass to prove it.
